Language connotations

Language connotations are words that carry a cultural or emotional associated meaning, usually, that is either positive or negative.

The burning sun bounced off the malnourished trees radiating a green tinge across the quad. Silence from the children filled the air as the ambience of the school grounds was dead.

Extended metaphor: Like a regular metaphor, an extended metaphor looks to draw on the shared figurative characteristics of two concepts. In order to extend the device, you should consider how language connotations, similes, metaphors and other devices combine throughout a piece to continually convey the shared characteristic.

  • segregation of groups
  • Unhuman like behaviour
  • Caged in
  • Let out only to eat

Stretching against the twilight, the skyline of NYC stands boldly. Much like a tree canopy, each skyscraper fights for the strongest sunlight position. Below, on the forest floor, the various animals go about their business. The dominant lion struts down the sidewalk, briefcase in hand overtaking the hustling city shoppers as he makes his way back to the throne overlooking the forest floor. Below him sit the helpless rejects curling back up into there corners, hibernating before night strikes again.
