Catch 22- wide reading #1

The film series Catch-22 directed by George Clooney, Ellen Kuras and Grant Heslov is a satirical dark comedy based off the novel of the same name by Joseph Heller. The protagonist of Catch-22 is Captain John Yossarian, age twenty-eight, a bombardier in the 256th Squadron of the Twenty-seventh Air Force, stationed on Pianosa during World War II. The novel examines the absurdity of war and military life through Yossarian and his cohorts, who attempt to maintain their sanity while fulfilling their service requirements so that they may return home. Yossarian is referred to as an antihero, meaning he is a leading character who perhaps lacks the classic heroic traits of mythology or legends. The author uses the realist genre of writing to express the day to day real life experiences these men were facing during gruesome hostility of war. Right from the start of the series we are witnessed to the downfall of Yossarian’s approach making us exposed to many different emotions that he is experiences including anger, fear, guilt and sorrow.  Early in his military career, while stationed at Lowery Field, Colorado, in 1942, he discovers the joy of malingering and the refuge of the hospital. He fakes appendicitis, avoiding training as he begins a long, loving relationship with hospital life, making him not like the usual heroic soldier you learn about from books and movies. The phrase catch-22 means  a paradoxical situation from which an individual cannot escape because of contradictory rules or limitations. Furious that thousands of people are trying to kill him, yossarian station kept increasing the number of missions he must fly, making him trapped by the bureaucratic rule Catch-22. The

Throughout out the series catch 22, I believe Joseph Heller was trying to get the message across to the viewer, that war itself was much more than any of us could anticipate. The reality was that these men weren’t as brave as they may have come across as, and the chance of taking off that runway and never coming back was feared by them all.
