Setting:

West egg (new money):

  • “i lived in West egg, the– well, the less fashionable of the two, through this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them”
  • “Everyone in West egg is a bootlegger”

East egg (old money):

  • Oh, i’ll stay in the East, don’t you worry,’he said, glancing at Daisy and then back at me as if he were alert for something more. I’d be a God Damn fool to live anywhere else.”
  • “Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water.”

Valley of ashes:

  • “This is a valley of ashes—a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air”.
  • The “desolate area of land” between the two is known as a “valley of ashes.”

New York:

  • The city seen from Queensboro bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and beauty in the world.”
  • “Anything can happen now that we’ve slid over this bridge,’ I thought. Even Gatsby could happen, without any particular wonder.”

West Egg: The West Egg represents the self-made rich, those who has made a life for themselves after WW1, through either entruburnal or crimes. The west egg conveys the idea of The American Dream as its new and exciting, these people are made out to be gaudy and fun. It is clear to us that these people spend their money wildey, and are condemnation of the excessive materialism which was the result of pursuing the american dream.

East egg: The East egg is filled with those who have always had money or been born into it. Throughout the book they come across being glamorous, having dignity and manners but as the book unfold we see how fake this lifestyle is. The East Egg shows us the result of the American dream, and hw wealth and greed causes destruction.

Valley of Ashes: The Valley of ashes is sectioned between East egg and New york city. It is first introduced in chapter 2 and is described as bleak and run down. As we read on we find out now this area symbolizes The hopeful American Dream. It is ought to be said that the Valley of Ashes shows us what happens to people who try to pursue The American Dream through honest hard work, but eventually end up nowhere.

New York: New york is presented in the novel as the booming, growing city after the great war. Nick describes New York as the “city seen for the first time, in its wild promise of all the mystery and beauty in the world.”, as they drive over the bridge the quote “…… a limousine passed us, driven by a white chauffeur, in which sat three modish Negroes, two bucks and a girl. I laughed aloud as the yolks of their eyeballs rolled toward us in haughty rivalry.” This is the exact description of the American dream Anyone can be rich and successful given the state of American society in 1922. This is a “dream” moment, it is not a reality of the time but by including it. Fitzgerald is helping us see how anything can happen in NYC, It holds promises for every class of person.
